11 Beach Bag Essentials for Vacationing Readers

Planning a trip to the beach this summer? Bas Bleu has—almost!—everything you need to enjoy a leisurely holiday by the shore. We’ve put together this handy packing list to help you load up your beach bag with the essentials. (You’ll have to bring your own bathing suit and sunscreen, though.)

Beach Reading Bundle
First and foremost, a beach trip requires plenty of reading material! If your beach bag isn’t quite big enough for all twelve of the novels in our “bookseller’s dozen”—a collection of light and cheerful page-turners, enchanting historical fiction, and heart-racing thrillers—you can pick and choose from the individual titles to create your own mini-bundle.

Sun and Shade Readers
Book selections aside, packing for a beach trip is all about streamlining. Why pack two pair of reading glasses when you can pack just one? Indoors or in the shade, these classic tortoiseshell readers keep your pages clear, while outside in the bright sun, a clip-on tinted filter transforms them into protective sun readers. (We’ll even throw in a storage case, to keep the sand off the lenses when you’re out riding the waves.)

Mykonos Ocean Kimono
While we’re on the topic of multifunctional accessories, this fetching drape does triple duty as a scarf, a wrap, even a sarong…yet folds up surprisingly small in your beach bag. The whisper-light fabric will keep you warm on chilly airplanes and in frosty air-conditioned restaurants, while the gorgeous Mediterranean colors make for a stylish cover-up on the beach or the pool deck.

The Beachcomber’s Companion
If strolling on the beach and hunting for shells is one of your favorite pastimes, this beautiful little book will help you identify coastal treasures while cultivating your environmental consciousness. And if you’re lucky enough to be the summer guest of a beach-dwelling friend, look no further for the perfect hostess gift!

Beachgoing New Yorker Puzzle
Because you can’t spend all day on the beach, take a respite from the heat—or enjoy an engaging screen-free activity after supper—when you tackle this 1,000-piece jigsaw puzzle. On a family vacation? Working to assemble this bright, beachy scene is a fun way to bring the young and young-at-heart generations together!

Summer Afternoon PJs
Restful nights and long, leisurely mornings (just one more cup of coffee…) call for cozy pajamas. These loose-fit PJs pair a T-shirt emblazoned with one of our favorite quotations from novelist Henry James—“Summer afternoon—summer afternoon; to me those have always been the two most beautiful words in the English language.”—with soft, nautical-striped lounge pants.

Seabirds Note Cards
We love a “wish you were here” postcard, but they don’t offer much writing space. Plus those gorgeous photos can inspire major travel envy. Instead, share your vacation exploits with friends and family when you jot down your greetings inside these handsome avian note cards from Northern Ireland.

Citronella Candle Tins
Mosquitos, gnats, no-see-ums…those pesky insects can put a serious damper on your summer bliss! Whether you’re dining al fresco, reading on the dock, or simply trying to enjoy the beach in peace, these fresh-scented citronella candles (in colorful lidded tins that travel well in your beach bag and nestle neatly in the sand) will help keep tiny airborne pests at bay.

Night Sky: A Field Guide to the Constellations
Thanks to development restrictions and wildlife conservation efforts (lights out for sea turtles!), beach towns often boast star-gazing opportunities we don’t get in the city. Hunker down in the sand or on the deck for a grand celestial tour when you’re armed with this compact “field guide to the heavens.” Identify the constellations and read all about their mythical and historical backgrounds with the help of the included red-LED flashlight.

Grand Slam Soaps
Sweat, sand, and sunscreen…after a long, hot day in the sun, your skin needs a refresher. Scrub away the day the natural way with these vegan and cruelty-free soaps, crafted with 100% natural ingredients and free from artificial fragrances and dyes—all handmade in Missouri as part of a job-creation machine for adults with intellectual disabilities. Toss one in your beach bag to keep clean all week long.

Seaside Reusable Totes
Now that your packing list is complete, leave your beat-up rolling suitcase in the closet and toss your gear into this trio of colorful reusable beach bags. Green turtles, red lobsters, and blue fish decorate the adorable lightweight totes which can each hold up to fifty pounds of gear…yet roll up small enough to store in your purse or dresser drawer! Best of all, if they’re soaked with sea water and sand by the end of your trip, you can just toss them in the washing machine.

Bon voyage, bluestockings!

  1. You can tell what my priorities are. My husband and I flew to visit our daughter in San Diego. (Speaking of good beaches….) He packed extra clothes in his carry on, in case our luggage got lost. I packed my books and my knitting. You can always buy extra clothes, but what if you can’t get to the bookstore and you’re in the middle of a chapter? ( Our luggage made it just fine.)
